Winnipeg
The majority of the children in Winnipeg’s North End program are from a First Nations background. They, along with all of the HEROS girls and boys, face the challenge of living in neighbourhoods where dilapidated houses line the streets and drugs, gangs & prostitution are prevalent. Violence is also something that the children are exposed to and in some cases this has led to them being moved from foster home to foster home or extended care. The participants in the St. John’s HEROS program are registered through the Winnipeg School District. At risk students who have dropped out or asked to leave their respective schools are able to continue their education at St. John’s and have the opportunity to use ice hockey to build their self esteem and learn life skills.
