History

HEROS began in 2000 in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Since its inception HEROS has expanded across Canada bringing hockey to under privileged youth.

2000 First summer camp in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside
2005 Program launches in Toronto, Ontario
2006 Program launches in Calgary, Alberta
2007 Program launches in Edmonton in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area
2008 HEROS international partners with Cooperation Ireland to provide support to youth from Ireland & Northern Ireland
2008 Toronto opens a second program
2008 Program launches in Sunshine Coast
2009 Program launches in Winnipeg’s North End
2010 Program launches in Montréal
2011 Winnipeg opens a second program
2012 Program launches in Ottawa
2013 All Stars programs launch in Edmonton, Sunshine Coast and Toronto (Jane & Finch)
2014 Program launches in Calgary, Bowness
2016 Program launches in Surrey
2017 All Stars program launches in Calgary, Bowness
2018 Super HEROS launches in Calgary
2019 Program launches in Victoria, Regina and All Stars in Surrey

2002 Program of the Year awarded by the Vancouver School Board
2003 Miracle Maker Award presented by CIBC – one of four recipients nation-wide
2007 Recipient of the Aspen Hope Award
2009 Recipients of the Belfast City Council Safety Award for work with at risk youth
2013 Governor General of Canada David Johnston acknowledges his patronage to HEROS
2014 HEROS participant Nick McCurdy named the first Canadian recipient for the NHL/Thurgood Marshall Scholarship
2015 HEROS participant Wyatt Christiansen is named recipient of the NHL/Thurgood Marshall Scholarship
2016 Prasanthan Aruchanan becomes the 3rd straight HEROS participant named as winner of the Thurgood Marshall / NHL Scholarship
