For the Love of Competition

February has long been recognized as the month of love but, in addition to Valentine’s goodies and hopefully a night off cooking (read: Dads, time to make a dinner reservation!), hockey lovers have plenty to be passionate about this month!

Not only is the professional hockey season now in full swing, on Saturday, February 14, Canada will celebrate the players and communities involved in the game with the 13th edition of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada. The theme of this year’s celebration is ‘Heart’ and throughout the day CBC will present viewers with stories that demonstrate the passion that brings people and communities together, as well as the life lessons learned by being involved in grassroots hockey.

The day-long broadcast (starting at 12 noon ET/9 a.m. PT) on CBC with Ron MacLean and Don Cherry live from Peterborough, ON features all seven Canadian NHL teams in action and will include live looks at local celebrations taking place from coast-to-coast. The games begin at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT with the Edmonton Oilers visiting the Detroit Red Wings, while the Winnipeg Jets play host to the Ottawa Senators.

Inside this month’s issue of One Million Skates, we will carry on the celebration with our “For the Love of Competition” theme. Hear from our experts about game-day preparation, performance power foods, improving reaction time, secrets on how to get “in the zone” and more! We’ve even got a few ideas that will help hockey dads score big points this Valentine’s Day. Hope you enjoy!
