Fitness Activities for Dad and Kids

Summer is the perfect time of year to make some memories with the kids. The crazy whirlwind of the hockey-season is behind you, with no practices, no games to race to, and the possibilities are endless. Your family can finally do all those things you’ve been talking about all year. Below are five of my favourite summer activities I shared with my dad growing up.

  • On weekends we used to go fishing. We’d take our boat out to the lake where we’d jump off and go for a swim.
  • We were gym buddies. I remember going to the gym with my dad as young as 13.
  • We biked together to visit grandma and grandpa. All uphill too!
  • Dad and I liked to golf, a tradition he’s carried on with my 10 year old nephew.
  • My favourite memory has to be kayaking at our cottage.

Whether it’s just playing catch in the park or the back yard, there are tons of ways for dads to get moving with their kids. It’s fun, great bonding time and it’s always good for your kids to get rid of some excess energy (or at least get a break from the TV). Running at your local track, combined with some hill climbs or running stairs is always a great workout too.

Whatever you do, try to be in the moment and have fun because the hockey season can be stressful and right now is all about recharging. Don’t forget to keep up the fun fitness activities into fall. It just might take the edge off for your anxious hockey player during team tryouts.
